In the 1950s Vernon Krieble, a retired chemistry professor, convinced his son Robert to leave his well-paid management job and become the co-founder of a start-up. Their business model was based upon a technical discovery for which no apparent need existed, a substance that solidified within minutes in the absence of air. They named this new technology ‘anaerobic’ and wanted to introduce this to the metalworking industry as a way to prevent machine parts from loosening or leaking. For designers, engineers and maintenance managers their proposal came close to heresy; they were offering a non-mechanical solution to a mechanical problem. Within ten years the Krieble’s had overcome the hesitancy around their new technology and made their invention a success, with Loctite becoming a state-of-the-art method for bonding, sealing or locking metal parts.
